A number of Taiwan-based network equipment makers, including Billion Electric, Edimax Technology, Gemtek Technology and Sercomm, have ventured, or plan to step, into the production of smart grid devices, according to industry sources.

Billion has stated that it will increase its investment for the development of related smart grid products and plans to roll out AMI (advanced metering infrastructure) and HAN (home area network) devices in the first quarter of 2010.

Edimax Technology also revealed that it has landed WLAN module orders for smart meters from a client in Asia with small-volume shipments to begin in early 2010. It expects shipments to pick up gradually.

Gemtek will develop WLAN modules for smart grids and detective devices targeting the North American market, whereas Sercomm have also landed orders for in-door power management devices from a client in Europe and shipments have already begun, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
